Arriving at SB900

So I have to admit that I wasn't looking forward to being assigned to SB900. Mainly because I was going to be just another face in the crowd. And I definitely didn't want to be on a starbase. I mean, you don't get to be the new Leah Brahms if nobody ever notices you.

But the first thing that happened when I got to SB900 was the Assistant Chief Engineer assigned me to Senior Chief Podolsky. And that is going to be my lucky break. Because everything they tell you at the Academy about senior noncommissioned officers running the Service is spot on.

So the first day I spent following Senior Chief Podolsky around, trying to convince him by my actions that I wasn't in need of having my nose wiped on an hourly basis.

On the second day Senior Chief Podolsky put a hyperspanner in my hand and let me get to work.

Last night Senior Chief Podolsky introduced me to a matronly senior NCO from Science, and they both patiently listened to my idea for upgrades on Class VI comm relays, politely (for senior noncomms) poking holes in my ideas and then forcing me to come up with solutions for the shortcomings they saw (or reasons why they weren't valid shortcomings).

So I spend my days working on every system on every auxiliary vessel on SB900, and my time off is either working on my own ideas, or expanding my practical knowledge of Starfleet engineering.

Being a face in the crowd isn't so bad after all.
